India got independence on 15 August 1947, but at that time the country did not have its own constitution. Even after independence, the country was being governed under the Government of India Act 1935. After hard work, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949, but the date of 26 January 1950 was chosen for its implementation.

Where was the first Republic Day parade held

Very few people know that the first Republic Day parade was not held on Rajpath. According to BBC, between 1950 and 1954, parades were organized at different places. In the initial years, the parade was held at the Irwin Stadium, now called the National Stadium, Kingsway Camp and the Red Fort grounds. For the first time in the year 1955, Rajpath, now called Dutta Path, was made the permanent venue of the Republic Day Parade.

With the implementation of the Constitution of India on 26 January 1950, the Government of India Act 1935 was abolished. From this day, the system of government elected by the people was fully implemented in the country.
