BrahMos missile is considered to be the fastest and deadliest supersonic cruise missile of the Indian Army. This missile, flying at a speed of about 3580 kilometers per hour, does not even give the enemy time to respond. Its combat use during Operation Sindoor proved its accuracy and destructive capability on a global scale.
BrahMos missile is a supersonic cruise missile developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint company of India and Russia. Its name is taken from the names of Brahmaputra River of India and Moskva River of Russia. This missile can be launched from land, warships, submarines and fighter aircraft, making it a multi-platform weapon system.
What makes BrahMos deadly?
BrahMos missile works on fire and forget system. This means that it does not require any additional instructions after launch. The missile itself identifies the target and destroys it. This technology makes it a very dangerous weapon for the enemy in modern warfare.
Speed and firepower of BrahMos missile
The speed of BrahMos is said to be between 3000 to 4000 kilometers per hour. Due to such high speed, the enemy air defense system does not get time to react. Its initial range was about 290 kilometers, which has been increased from 450 to 650 kilometers. Work is also going on to further expand its range in future.
Lethal Warhead and Precise Targeting
BrahMos missile carries an explosive warhead of about 200 to 300 kg, which is capable of destroying large military bases, bunkers and warships. This missile flies at a very low altitude, which increases its ability to escape from radar. Its accuracy makes it extremely effective strategically.
Different variants of BrahMos
Many variants of BrahMos missile have been developed. This includes the version launched from a warship, the version launched from a mobile launcher by the Army and the air-launched BrahMos launched from the Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft. Apart from this, a submarine-launched version is also available, which is capable of attacking the enemy without warning. For the future, work is also going on on advanced versions like BrahMos-NG and BrahMos-II.
BrahMos’ decisive role in Operation Sindoor
The BrahMos missile was used for the first time in actual combat during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. This operation was done in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack. During this period, between 7 and 10 May, precise attacks were carried out on terrorist hideouts and military airbases of Pakistan. According to reports, BrahMos missiles fired from Sukhoi-30 MKI caused serious damage to runways, hangars and bunkers of several airbases. This was the first combat use of BrahMos, which established it in the category of the world’s deadliest supersonic cruise missiles.
