How dangerous is the disease?

Liver cancer is counted among serious diseases, especially when it reaches the fourth stage. Stage-4 means that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, which makes the treatment complicated and the condition becomes very sensitive. In such a situation, the patient needs intensive medical monitoring. Rinku had recently reached Chennai with the team, but returned the next morning after receiving news of his father’s deteriorating condition. His availability is now considered doubtful for the important T20 match against Zimbabwe.

How dangerous is liver cancer?

According to Mayo Clinic, which provides information about health, liver cancer is a disease that starts in the liver cells. The liver is an important organ located in the upper right part of the abdomen, below the diaphragm and above the stomach. It performs many important functions in the body, such as purifying the blood, helping in digestion and storing nutrients. Many types of cancer can develop in the liver, but the most common type is hepatocellular carcinoma, which begins in the main cells of the liver, called hepatocytes. Apart from this, there are other types such as intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatoblastoma, although these are relatively less common. In many cases, cancer does not start in the liver, but spreads from some other part of the body like colon, lung or breast and reaches the liver. Such cases are called metastatic cancer and are named after the organ where it started.

What are its symptoms?

There are often no obvious symptoms in the early stages of primary liver cancer. When the disease starts progressing, some signs may appear. These include weight loss without effort, loss of appetite, upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, persistent weakness and fatigue. Some people may also experience symptoms such as abdominal swelling, yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes called jaundice, and white or discolored stools. If any symptoms are experienced that cause concern or persist for a long time, it is important to consult a doctor. The situation can be handled better with early diagnosis and proper treatment.
