Born in Bengali family
Rituparno Ghosh was born on 31 August 1963 in a Bengali family in Kolkata. His father, Sunil Ghosh, was a documentary filmmaker and painter, so Rituparno got the atmosphere of art and cinema since childhood.
He did his studies in Economics and did Masters with this subject, but he was always interested in film and art. He started his career as a copyrieter, where he made many great advertisements with his creative thinking. This talent soon pulled him towards cinema.

Rituparno Ghosh made his first film ‘Hirer Angati’ in 1992, but he got the real identity from ‘Unishe April’. The film used to show the feelings of women and their complex relationship very beautifully and that is why it also received the National Award for Best Feature Film.
After this, Rituparno directed many magnificent films, such as ‘Chokher Bali’, ‘Rainkot’, ‘Dahan’, ‘Titli’, ‘The Last Lear’, ‘Shubho Muhurta’, ‘Barwali’. He worked in Hindi, Bengali and English in all three languages and brought out important issues of society through his films.
Artists living openly
The biggest feature of Rituparno Ghosh was that he openly stated that he is gay. At that time people did not speak openly about this, but Rituparno did not hide their identity and raised their voice for the LGBTQ community. He often appeared in programs wearing women dress and considered it a common part of his life.
At the age of 49, he said goodbye to the world
To become a woman, Rituparno underwent several surgery and took hormone therapy, which caused a bad effect on her body and deteriorated her health. On 30 May 2013, he died of a heart attack at the age of just 49 years. His departure caused mourning in Bengali cinema and the entire Indian film world. Many big people including Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were present at her funeral.
Rituparno won 12 National Awards in his film career. He beautifully showed issues like homosexuality in films. His skill and courage are inspiring for the youth.
