Why is Rs 102 crore being returned?
Investigation by the UP Electricity Regulatory Commission revealed that the electricity distribution companies had collected more money than the prescribed norms in the name of various charges and fees. Some such additional charges were also added to the bills. Which was not allowed in the rules. Considering this negligence as serious, the Commission took a strict stand and directed that the entire amount recovered from the consumers should be returned.

After this, Discom has started the process of giving refund of about Rs 102 crore. The Commission has made it clear that henceforth there will have to be complete transparency in the billing system and no compromise with the interests of consumers will be accepted.
How to get refund?
According to the Electricity Department, this refund will not be given to consumers in cash or directly into the bank account. For those from whom excess money has been charged, this amount will be adjusted in their upcoming electricity bills. This clearly means that the next bill will be less or in some cases the bill amount may even be zero.
