‘Rs 5,713 crore to madrassas-maulvis, nothing for development and science’, BJP MPs angry over Bengal budget

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi has made a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress government regarding the budget of West Bengal. In a press conference on Friday (February 6, 2026), he alleged that in the latest budget of the West Bengal government, huge funds have been allocated disproportionately to madrassas, clerics and minority institutions, ignoring development, science and industry. He called it appeasement politics.

According to IANS report, Sudhanshu Trivedi said that on one hand the country is moving towards new heights of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is reflected in the recent Union Budget, while on the other hand West Bengal is falling into the deep abyss of appeasement under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. He claimed that in the Bengal budget, about Rs 5,713 crore has been allocated for minority and madrasa heads, while only Rs 1,400 crore has been kept for industry and commerce, Rs 217 crore for information technology and only Rs 82 crore for science and research.

He said that this is the same West Bengal from where great scientists like Satyendra Nath Bose, Jagadish Chandra Bose and Amal Kumar Rai Chaudhary emerged. Despite this, giving limited funds to science and technology raises questions on the priorities of the state. He also mentioned the allocation of Rs 920 crore and Rs 810 crore for the development of North and West Bengal respectively, saying that this is inadequate compared to the overall development needs.

Dr. Trivedi also alleged that provisions have been made in the budget not only for madrassas but also for maulvis and muezzins (who give azaan in mosques). He claimed that proof of residential or permanent address has not been made mandatory for these payments, which raises questions on transparency.

Citing the old statements of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, he said that in 2006, Bhattacharya had described some unrecognized madrassas as centers of anti-national activities and had accused them of being sponsored by Pakistan’s ISI. Dr. Trivedi questioned that if despite such allegations, financial assistance is being given to madrassas on a large scale, then is this not politics at the cost of national security and social harmony.

The BJP MP said that the Mamata Banerjee government has given OBC status to 78 out of 87 castes of the Muslim community and now has also increased financial assistance through the budget. Referring to the recent statement of the Chief Minister, he asked whether this amount is being given out of love or in an atmosphere of fear, as was indicated in the statement related to the road race.

He further said that this is not only the responsibility of Trinamool Congress but also the failure of the alliances that allegedly promote minority appeasement politics. He raised the question that why the government giving the slogan of ‘Maa, Mati, Manush’ spent so much on a particular section instead of the overall development of the state and is this not injustice to the people of Bengal.

Dr. Trivedi, while directly questioning Mamata Banerjee, said what is the logic behind giving Rs 5,700 crore for Madrassa and Maulvi and why the development, science and industry of the state were not given priority.
