The situation has reached a critical point due to Russia’s entry in the East China Sea amidst the ongoing tension between China and Japan. Russia has tried to send a strong message to Japan by fielding its strategic bombers and fighter planes in the Indo-Pacific region in support of China. Japan and South Korea have called it a matter of deep concern.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the air forces of China and Russia have conducted joint air-patrolling in the Asia-Pacific (Indo-Pacific) region. In this patrol, Russia’s Tu-95 Strategic Missile Carrier (Bomber) along with China’s H-6 bombers conducted air patrol in the East China Sea, Sea of Japan and Western Pacific Ocean. During this period, Russia’s Su-30, Su-35 and China’s J-16 fighter jets provided cover to these bombers.
However, Russia claimed that this joint patrolling was done under international laws, but Japan and South Korea have expressed strong objection. Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has given a strong reaction and said that China and Russia together are trying to show strength against Japan, which is a matter of concern.
On Tuesday (December 9, 2025), China released the audio of a call claiming to have warned Japanese aircraft, while Japan said Chinese military officials did not respond to the hotline. Both countries are blaming each other.
In fact, Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has announced to strengthen its defense sector in the East China Sea, and has also announced help during China’s attack on Taiwan. China is irritated by this and China and Japan have started a war of supremacy in the Indo-Pacific region.
South Korea lodged objection to Tuesday’s China-Russia joint air patrol. South Korea’s army has said that fighter planes from China and third countries have flown in its airspace. South Korea said, ’07 Russian aircraft and 02 Chinese aircraft entered its border.’ South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff has said that two Chinese and seven Russian military aircraft had entered the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIG), after which South Korea sent its fighter planes. These planes kept coming and going in our airspace for about an hour and then went out.
In fact, last week China deployed its aircraft carrier Liaoning for the first time in the East China Sea on a training mission. During this period, Chinese J-15 planes took off from the aircraft carrier. Japan has also been claiming the East China Sea and had accused Chinese aircraft of violating Japanese air-space. Japan had scrambled the American fighter jet F-15. During this time, both the countries (China and Japan) had accused each other’s fighter jets of jamming radar.
