What is S-400?
The S-400, also known as Triumf, is a long-range air defense system developed by Russia. It is specially designed to intercept enemy aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and even ballistic missiles. India bought five S-400 squadron from Russia in 2018 under a deal of about Rs 35,000 crore. It is named ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ in India.
How does it work?
The S-400 is a multi-layer system, which can track and neutralize several types of targets simultaneously. It uses four types of missiles, whose range is up to 40km, 100km, 200km and 400km. This system is able to identify and destroy every target flying from 100 to 40,000 feet simultaneously.
One of its major feature is that the S-400 system is mounted on the 8X8 truck, which makes it very easy to move. This is the reason why it does not have a fixed position, which makes it very difficult to detect it for the enemy.
This system is known as SA-21 Growler in NATO. It is also capable of working in temperatures ranging from minus 50 to minus 70 ° C.
Radar and tracking capacity
The S-400 radar system is very powerful. It can track around 300 targets simultaneously in the range of about 600 km. Its firing capacity is also tremendous – it can launch 72 missiles at a time, which can prevent any major airstrikes.

The S-400 is being discussed because this system detects the enemy’s air strikes long before and can eliminate them in the air only when needed.
