The doctors of Delhiās Safdarjung Hospital have performed such a feat, which has become an example in the medical world. In fact, the doctors of Safdarjung not only saved the life of a 19-year-old girl by successfully removing a huge retroperitoneal tumor weighing 10.1 kg from her stomach, but also freed her from the unbearable pain that had been going on for five years.
The size of the stomach was increasing for five years
The 19-year-old girl who came to the surgery OPD was suffering from increasing abdominal swelling for the last five years. Despite treatment in many hospitals, he did not get proper treatment. His family had almost given up hope. In such a situation, he was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, where within just a week after admission, his tests were completed and the decision of Exploratory Laparotomy was taken.
The tumor had taken over the entire stomach.
Pre-operative imaging revealed that the girl had developed a huge retroperitoneal tumor of approximately 30x20x20 cm size, which had originated near the diaphragm on the left side and had spread throughout the upper abdomen. This tumor was not only pressing the major blood vessels and vital organs, but had also pulled the kidney down and changed its position and direction. During investigation, it was feared that it could be a mature teratoma.
The surgery was risky
During the operation, doctors found that the tumor had occupied the entire stomach space and had pushed the rest of the organs to the right side. It was extremely challenging to remove this huge tumor under en-mass excision, as it was attached to many important blood vessels. Despite this, surgeons restored the spleen, kidneys, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, intestines and colon to their normal locations. Along with this, diaphragm and pleura were repaired. Also, a chest drain was placed.
10.1 kg tumor successfully removed
The weight of the tumor removed during surgery was found to be 10.1 kg. This surgery was completely successful, in which the head of surgery unit S6, Prof. Dr. Shivani B. The role of Paruthi, Dr. Arun Kumar Singh, Dr. Tariq Hamid, Dr. Sushma and their team was important. Apart from this, the anesthesia team was led by Dr. Nidhi Agarwal and Dr. Vishnu Panwar. After surgery, the patient was kept under observation in ICU and then in HDU Ward 24 for a few days. Due to the continuous care of the doctors, the patient completely recovered and was discharged from the hospital.
