Delhi’s VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital on 19 November 2025 added a new chapter to kidney transplant services by performing successful kidney transplant of a child for the first time. This achievement is not only a proud moment for the hospital, but is also the first pediatric kidney transplant conducted in any central government hospital in the country.

11 year old child got new life

An 11-year-old child from Sultanpur, UP was suffering from a rare condition like ‘Bilateral Hypodysplastic Kidney’ for about one and a half years. The child, who was brought to Safdarjung Hospital in critical condition, even suffered cardiac arrest during treatment and investigation revealed that both his kidneys had completely failed. Since then he was dependent on regular dialysis.

Mother became a life giver, complex surgery was successful

According to experts, kidney transplant in children is always considered difficult. Fitting an adult kidney into a small body and connecting it to delicate blood vessels is a very complex process. The child’s mother donated a kidney and after the surgery the kidney started functioning immediately. Doctors say that the child is now completely free from the need of dialysis and is recovering rapidly.

Hospital becomes support amid financial crisis

The child’s father runs the family as a laborer and the expenditure of lakhs of rupees in a private hospital was impossible for him. The hospital administration not only took over the transplant process but also announced that it would bear the cost of the expensive medicines required thereafter.

Team of expert doctors together created history

Hospital Director Dr. Sandeep Bansal said that this achievement is the result of years of hard work and dedication of the medical team. He described this as a step to strengthen the capacity and confidence of government health services in the country. This surgery was led by Professor, Chief Director of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant. Dr. Pawan Vasudeva did it. Along with him Prof. Dr. Neeraj Kumar was also included in the surgical team. The pediatric team was led by Dr. Shobha Sharma, along with Dr. Srinivasvaradhan and Head of the Department, Dr. Pradeep K. Debta stay connected. The anesthesia team was headed by Dr. Sushil, whose team included Dr. Mamta and Dr. Sonali.
