This interview is about the creative journey of the veteran lyricist and composer, whose following spans four generations.
From the Millennials of the 90s to today’s Gen Z, his songs reside in every heart. He explains that this relatability didn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of his curiosity, hunger to learn, and ability to adapt to each new generation.
After working with stalwarts like RD Burman and Laxmikant–Pyarelal, he recreated himself with Himesh Reshammiya, AR Rahman and then the new generation—Amaal Mallik, Mithoon and young composers. He says that to understand the new thinking, the most important thing is to remove the veil of seniority, sit with them, talk, party so that a real connection can be made.
Keeping past experiences aside, he embraced today’s love, relationships and modern emotions, creating hit songs like ‘Char Baj Gaye – Party Abhi Baaki Hai’.
This curiosity makes him a favorite of every generation.
