Emergency nasbandi campaign: The President has announced an emergency, but there is nothing to panic in it. When on 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced the emergency on radio with these words, the whole country was scared. It lasted till almost two years i.e. 21 March 1977. It has been considered a black spot on India’s democracy. During that time, the country had turned into a jailknow overnight. Sanjay Gandhi’s order was that sterilization is a solution to stop the growing population. In such a situation, millions of people were forcibly sterilized across the country. But this idea was not of Sanjay Gandhi, so who had suggested him.
60 million people sterilized
During the Emergency, sterilization was the most oppressive campaign. The task of implementing this decision was on Sanjay Gandhi’s shoulders. He had to prove himself in a short time, so he took a very tough stand. People were forcibly sterilized. More than 60 lakh people were sterilized by entering the houses, greedy, catching buses, holding from the fields. In this period, Indira Gandhi ran the country as a dictator.
Who gave the idea of sterilization
The growing population for Indian intellectuals has always been a matter of concern. People are more inspired by the Western perspective in this case that more population invites economic backwardness. In 1951, India’s population was about 361 million. At that time, famous demographicist RA Gopalaswamy estimated that it would increase at the rate of about five lakhs every year. He said that if this continues, India will always have to struggle to meet food demand even after importing millions of tons every year.

Due to this, Gopalaswamy suggested a campaign of mass sterilization. There is something that no other country has done before this scale. Recognizing him, the government started a sterilization program in 1952. Made people aware for this, but still it proved to be unsuccessful. In such a situation, Sanjay Gandhi strictly implemented the rules during the Emergency. Sanjay Gandhi wanted to have a quick solution on population control. In such a situation, he set up sterilization camps and set the necessary targets.
