Just before the first phase of voting for Bihar elections, at midnight on 1 November in Patna, JDU candidate and controversial former MLA Anant Kumar Singh was arrested in the case of murder of Jan Suraj worker Dularchand Yadav. Confirming the arrest, Patna SSP Karthikeya Sharma said that the police is continuously investigating this matter. This arrest has created a stir in the politics of Mokama area before the Bihar Assembly elections.
Anant Singh’s reaction on Facebook after his arrest
Anant Singh’s first reaction immediately after his arrest came on his official Facebook page. A short video was posted there, in which Bihar Police is taking him into custody. It is written on the video – “Satyamev Jayate!! I have full faith in the people of Mokama!! Therefore, now the people of Mokama will contest the elections!” It is clear from this statement that Anant Singh is trying to instill confidence in his supporters and is calling himself a victim of a political conspiracy.
Tension arising from violence in Mokama
On October 30, 75-year-old Jan Suraj worker Dularchand Yadav was killed in the violence that took place during the election campaign in Mokama. According to reports, there was stone pelting and firing in the clash between two political groups, in which many people were injured. This incident increased tension in the area and the administration had to tighten security arrangements. Patna DM Dr Thiagarajan SM said that the situation is now under control and no one will be allowed to take law into their hands. He clarified that “Strict action will be taken against anyone who tries to obstruct the election process.”
Mokama is considered the political stronghold of strongmen.
In Bihar politics, Mokama has been considered the stronghold of ‘Bahubali’ leaders for a long time. Anant Singh, his brother Dilip Singh and former MP Surajbhan Singh have been prominent faces of the politics of this area. This time there is a direct contest between JDU’s Anant Singh and RJD’s Veena Devi (Surajbhan Singh’s wife) on Mokama seat. Both the candidates come from Bhumihar community, which has made this contest more interesting. In the first phase, voting in Mokama will be held on 6 November, the second phase on 11 November and counting of votes will be done on 14 November.
