These days, a strange but interesting incident related to Türkiye is becoming increasingly viral on social media. Here a court ordered a husband to pay compensation to his ex-wife simply because he had saved her name in his phone as “chubby” (fat). This may sound trivial, but the court considered it insulting and ruled in favor of the woman.
The matter is of Usak city of Türkiye. There was a divorce going on between a husband and wife. Meanwhile, the wife told in the court that her husband had written her name as ‘Tombek’ in the contact list of his phone. The word ‘Tombek’ means “chubby” i.e. “fat” in Turkish language. The wife said that this name was given to make fun of her and it hurt her sentiments.
The court took serious cognizance
During the hearing in the court, it came to light that the wife felt very bad about this. She said that this name is going to hurt her self-esteem. The court agreed with the woman and ordered the husband to pay compensation for “physical and moral loss” i.e. financial and mental loss. Türkiye’s Court of Cassation, while giving its verdict, said that no one can be made fun of on the basis of his weight or body. Even if they are husband and wife, both should respect each other. This decision of the court has now become a legal precedent, which means if someone else does this, similar action can be taken against him.

Debate broke out on social media
After this incident, there is a lot of discussion on social media. Some people are praising the court’s decision and saying that this is the right step for the respect of women. Whereas some people are looking at it from a funny perspective. One user wrote… “Being fat is not bad, and being called fat is also not an insult. Perhaps the husband’s intentions may not have been wrong.” While some people are saying… “Lovely names are kept in every relationship, but if the other person feels bad then it becomes not a joke but an insult.”
