How Screen Time Affects Mental Health: Nowadays the word “brain rot” is being heard a lot. This means being online so much that it starts affecting the brain. The problem of fatigue, irritability or distraction that occurs after scrolling on social media for hours is also being linked to this name. Experts believe that this word may sound light, but there is a serious truth hidden behind it.

people are facing problems

Many people are now having difficulty concentrating. People who earlier used to read a book comfortably, now lose attention after just a few pages. A major reason for this is smartphones and continuous notifications, which keep distracting the mind again and again. Research shows that watching short videos on platforms like TikTok, Instagram or YouTube Shorts can affect our concentration, memory and mental health. The habit of frequently changing the subject and continuously scrolling does not allow the mind to stay on one thing for a long time.

What do researchers say?

According to MIT researcher Natalia Kosmina, today it has become difficult for people to watch even a 20-minute video, because the brain has now become accustomed to small content. However, there is no complete consensus yet on how serious its impact is in the long run. Some research suggests that changes have been seen in some parts of the brain in people with more screen time, but it is not clear whether this is the cause or the result.

On which people was the study conducted?

In a study published in 2025, research was done on more than 7,000 children, in which it was found that excessive screen time can reduce the thickness of the outer layer of the brain i.e. the cortex. This part helps in thinking, remembering and taking decisions. Apart from this, excessive screen time also affects sleep. Especially children and teenagers use phones till late night, due to which they do not get complete sleep. Continuous lack of sleep can also affect brain development. However, experts also say that not all types of screen time are bad. What matters is what you are doing on the screen.

What is the effect on students?

A study conducted on AI chatbots found that students who use them more are able to learn less and are unable to remember what they have written. The reason for this is that the brain remains less active. Experts advise to use the screen in a balanced manner. Stay away from your phone before sleeping, delete unnecessary apps and use technology wisely.
