We have read since childhood that there is a heart in our body, which is one of the most important organs in the human body. As long as it beats, man walks. As soon as it stops beating, a person’s life ends. Its job is to pump blood throughout the body. All kinds of questions regarding heart keep going viral on social media, one of which is “Are there two hearts in the human body?”. This question sounds very strange whether there are really two hearts. Let us tell you what is the truth behind this.

human heart

If we talk about the heart, there is only one real heart in the human body, which is present in the chest. It works like a pump and circulates blood throughout the body. The heart of a normal human being beats about 1 lakh times every day and pumps about 7000 to 8000 liters of blood. This organ is the basis of life and without it the body cannot function.

second heart of man

Doctors and experts say that the “second heart” in the human body does not mean another organ like the heart, rather it is a kind of metaphor. The calf muscles in the leg are called the second heart. Calf muscles help in carrying our blood from the legs to the heart. When we walk or run, these muscles contract and push blood upward through the veins. Since this function is similar to that of the heart, i.e. pumping blood, the calf muscles are called the “second heart”. It is called the second heart because when you stand for a long time, blood starts accumulating in the veins of the legs. In such a situation, the movement of the calf muscles helps in pumping blood upward. If this process does not happen properly, then diseases like swelling, pain and varicose veins can occur in the legs.

How can we keep our heart healthy?

If you want to keep your second heart healthy, then walk and jog daily. Choose stairs instead of lift, this strengthens the calf muscles. Try not to stand or sit in the same position for a long time, this affects them.
