Dangers Of Self Medication: For some time now, diseases have increasingly made their home among people. This is the reason why some pills are definitely found lying in the medicine box of every house, be it fever, cough or sore throat. Yes, we are talking about antibiotics, which people often use for quick relief. But experts clearly warn that this habit of today may backfire in the future. Antibiotic resistance, once thought to be a distant problem, has now become a rapidly growing threat. Misuse of these medicines can complicate even simple infections and leave you more vulnerable.

Antibiotics are no longer as effective as before

For the last few years, doctors around the world have been continuously sounding the alarm on this silent but dangerous crisis. Antibiotics are no longer as effective as before. Dr. Amrita Gupta, Consultant Physician (Internal Medicine) of Auro Superspeciality Hospital, Patna, says, “Antibiotics were once considered miracle medicines, but their reckless use gave the bacteria an opportunity to change and become stronger. Now often such patients come whose simple infections are not cured even by basic antibiotics. The biggest reason for this is self-medication, leaving the course incomplete or misuse of medicines.” The result is that infections are now pushing for more difficult, expensive and risky treatment.

What does WHO say?

The World Health Organization has also included antibiotic resistance among the world’s biggest health threats. This problem is increasing rapidly in India because here antibiotics are easily available without prescription and in many places the method of giving medicines is also different, people do not take doctor’s advice. Amrita Gupta says, “It is no longer just about one person. Misuse of antibiotics can put the entire community at risk as drug-resistant infections spread.”

Some steps to keep yourself safe

Stop taking antibiotics on your own – Taking medicines left at home is not beneficial but harmful. Amrita Gupta says, “Do not take antibiotics at all without doctor’s advice. There is no need for them in common cold or viral fever.”

complete the full course of medication – The biggest mistake is to leave the medicine when you feel half cured. By stopping antibiotics midway, the strongest bacteria survive and become resistant. Therefore it is important to finish the entire course.

Do not insist on antibiotics from the doctor – Doctors know when antibiotics are needed. If the doctor does not prescribe medicine, trust his decision.
