Symptoms And Treatment Of Aplastic Anemia: A small initiative of 32 year old Swati from Bengaluru gave a new life to a young man. He played an important role in saving the life of 19 year old Anandu by donating blood stem cells. Anandu was suffering from severe aplastic anemia, a serious blood disease, which can prove fatal if not treated on time. Anandu came to know about this disease when he was studying in 10th class. After continuous fever, investigation revealed that he had aplastic anemia. This is a condition in which the bone marrow stops producing enough new blood cells. According to doctors, the most effective treatment for this disease is considered to be bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant.

try on doctor’s advice

Dr. V.P., pediatric hemato-oncology expert at MVR Cancer Center, Kozhikode. Krishnan advised Anandu for stem cell transplant. After this the search for a suitable donor started. During this time the family had to face both emotional and financial challenges. He also got some financial assistance under the DKMS Patient Funding Program, which is being run to help patients.

On the other hand, Swati, who works as an IT consultant in Bengaluru, participated in a donor registration drive organized at her company’s campus in 2016. Due to this registration, in 2022 he got a call from DKMS that his stem cell could match with Anandu. Swati agreed to donate without hesitation and her family also fully supported this decision.

Improvement in health after transplant

After the successful transplant, Anandu’s health gradually improved. Now his blood report is stable and he is living a normal life. At present, while continuing his studies, he is also pursuing his hobby of photography and videography. Experts say that in serious blood diseases like aplastic anemia, stem cell transplant is sometimes the only option to save life. However, the biggest challenge is to find a suitable donor. According to DKMS India, only a small portion of the eligible population in the country is registered as potential stem cell donors, making it difficult for patients to find a match. Doctors believe that if more people register as stem cell donors, many patients suffering from blood cancer and other serious blood diseases can get a new life.
