Iran is currently facing an unprecedented drought situation. Rainfall in the capital Tehran and other areas has fallen to record lows, leaving reservoirs almost empty and citizens facing severe water shortages. While officials have appealed to people to save water, controversial statements have also emerged in the country.
There is only less than 10% water left in major water supply structures in Tehran, such as the Latian and Karaj dams. According to dam managers, there has been a decline of about 92% in rainfall this year compared to last year, and the remaining water is mostly ‘dead water’, i.e. not usable. Local resident and rapper Wafa Ahmedpur shared information about water shortage on social media, in which he said that water was not coming from the tap for several hours.
President Masood Pezeshkian warned
President Massoud Pezeshkian has warned that if there is not enough rain, Tehran’s water supply may have to be limited. He also said that if rationing is not sufficient, we may have to consider evacuating the city. However, former mayor Ghulam Hussain Karbaschi called this suggestion a joke and did not consider it feasible.
What plan did the government make?
The government plans to control water consumption by imposing fines and limiting supply in high consumption areas. Iran’s Energy Minister Abbas Ali Abadi said that water flow can be reduced to zero at night. Additionally, the recent Israeli conflict has also affected the capital’s aging water infrastructure, further exacerbating the water crisis.
MP Mohsin Araki gave controversial statement
Meanwhile, Expert Assembly member and MP Mohsin Araki has given a controversial statement and blamed women for the drought. He said that women do not wear hijab, so Allah warned the country by stopping the rain.
No chance of rain for next 10 days
The Meteorological Department has not predicted any possibility of rain for the next 10 days. The situation in the capital Tehran is becoming serious and citizens are having to make extra efforts to collect water. Amidst the increasing threat of drought and water crisis, both the government and citizens are focusing on water saving measures.
