The politics of Kerala was once again heated, when Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor made serious allegations against the Kunamkulam police. The case is two years old, but after the CCTV footage surfaced, it again came into the discussion. In the video, Youth Congress leader V.S. Sujit is seen dragging him to the police station and repeatedly slapping and punching him.
This incident has shocked not only the Congress party but also common citizens. Reacting to this, Tharoor said that attacking the citizen who questioned the threats of the police is not only illegal but inhuman. He demanded Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Home Department to take immediate action.
Congress’s sharp response and action demands
The Congress party has started surrounding the government on this matter. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly VD Satishan wrote a letter to the Chief Minister demanding the dismissal of the accused from service. He alleged that high officials deliberately removed the names from the charge sheet and tried to save the culprits by pressing the report. Satishan also stated that the footage could be revealed only after a long legal battle under the Right to Information Act (RTI). He says that as long as the accused police officers are in service, it is difficult for the victim and the general public to get justice.
Sujit’s pain and Congress leaders support
VS. Sujit told the media that the accused policemen had also offered Rs 20 lakh to suppress the case. He said that it took him more than two years to get footage through RTI and during this time an attempt was made to weaken the matter as a minor offense. Senior Congress leaders Sunny Joseph, Beni Behanan and TN Pratapan met Sujit and supported him. He says that it raises questions not only the matter of Sujit but the security and judicial system of the whole society.
Protests and police encounter
In protest against the incident, Youth Congress workers took out a march to the house of accused sub-inspector Nuhman in Malappuram. The situation became violent when the protesters tried to break the police barricades. The police lathi -charged, in which many people were injured. According to reports, Nuhman is currently living in the Thrissur Police Quarter.
