Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor is once again in the headlines. However, this time it is not his statement but an article written by him that has created an uproar. An article written on opinion portal Project Syndicate on October 31 regarding Tharoor’s ‘political dynasty’ has given BJP an opportunity to corner Congress.
Tharoor has explained in detail how dynasty-inspired politics weakens the quality of governance. Tharoor’s comments have once again given BJP an opportunity to corner Congress. BJP claims that in his article the Congress leader has directly attacked India’s nepotism (Rahul Gandhi) and younger brother-nepotism (Tejashwi Yadav).
What did Congress leader Udit Raj say?
Regarding this matter, Congress leader Udit Raj told ANI that the dynastic approach is not limited to politics only, but is spread in all areas of India. A doctor’s son becomes a doctor. The son of a businessman is engaged in business and politics is also no exception to this. Giving examples of dynasty politics, he took names of many people including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said, “From Naidu to Pawar, from DMK to Mamata, from Mayawati to Amit Shah’s son, there are many such examples. The disadvantage is that opportunities remain limited to families only.”
Pramod Tiwari called Nehru the most capable PM
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari, while defending Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and the Gandhi family in Indian politics, said that leadership comes from merit. The Congress MP said, “Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the most capable Prime Minister of this country. Indira Gandhi proved herself by sacrificing her life. Rajiv Gandhi served this country by sacrificing his life. So if someone calls the Gandhi family a dynasty, then no family in India had as much sacrifice, dedication and capability as this family did?”
What has Shashi Tharoor written?
At the center of this entire controversy, Shashi Tharoor has given his clear opinion on the topics dominated by Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, political leadership-birth rights and nepotism, meritocracy. An excerpt from Tharoor’s article on the opinion portal reads, “The influence of the Nehru-Gandhi family, including independent India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, current opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, is linked to the history of India’s freedom struggle, but it has also cemented the idea that political leadership can be a birthright.”
He also explained how nepotism harms governance. He further writes, “When political power is determined by lineage rather than competence, commitment or grassroots engagement, the quality of governance suffers. This is even more problematic when the main qualification for candidates is their surname.”
