The International Criminal Tribunal of Bangladesh (ICT-BD) has announced its verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (17 November 2025). He was being tried in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity during last year’s student-led movement. Due to this movement, Hasina’s Awami League Party government fell. The International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) has convicted the former Prime Minister in this case. Declaring him the mastermind of the movement, he has been sentenced to death.

The International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) tribunal, while delivering its verdict, included 5 main charges, which are as follows:

1. Mastermind of crushing the protest, got the protesters killed
2. Firing on civilians through helicopters and drones
3. Got the student activist murdered
4. Statement to incite violence
5. Crimes against humanity

The judge included a number of points while delivering the verdict, which are as follows:

  • Sheikh Hasina used force to retain power during the July–August 2024 protests.
  • An ICT judge, while reading an investigation report, said that Sheikh Hasina government threatened a doctor and got the post-mortem report of student activist Abu Saeed changed 4-5 times.
  • Dhaka Metropolitan Police has issued a shoot-at-sight order for anyone involved in arson, cocktail explosion or attempting to cause harm to police and civilians, the Dhaka-Tribune reported.
  • An ICT judge, reading an investigation report, said that Hasina had ordered the use of helicopters and lethal weapons to kill the protesters. He was reading excerpts of a purported conversation between Hasina and former South Dhaka Municipal Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
  • An ICT judge said that the Bangladeshi army opened fire on protesters in Dhaka on 5 August. Helicopters were used to scare the protesters. Reading out a report, he said that medical aid and treatment were denied to the injured protesters.
  • The tribunal said that Sheikh Hasina made hate speeches and in a phone conversation with an aide named Shakeel had asked him to kill 226 people related to the cases registered against her.
