The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia is constantly deepening. Today is the fourth day of the struggle, but the clashes between the armies of the two countries are not taking the name of stopping. Despite the appeals of ceasefire internationally, heavy firing continued in the border area. As soon as dawn, the echo of cannons began to be heard around the border, which created an atmosphere of panic among the common people.
Clash again on the border of both countries
According to the AFP report, a clash started again on the border in the early hours of Sunday (July 27, 2025). The city of Cambodia, which is located about 20 km from the border, also heard the sounds of the blasts. From this, it can be guessed how heavy the armies of the two countries are doing heavily. This incident is happening at a time when diplomatic efforts for the ceasefire between the two countries have intensified. However, it has become clear from Sunday’s shelling that tension on the ground is still intact.
Trump claimed ceasefire
US President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed that the two countries may soon be ceasefire after talks with Thailand and Cambodia leaders, but a few hours after his statement, shelling on the border started again. Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phummatha Vachayachai and Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet will soon meet and take steps towards the ceasefire. However, heavy shelling on the border on Sunday morning has weakened this claim, making it clear that the ground reality still remains very stressful.
What is the dispute between Thailand and Cambodia?
This dispute between Thailand and Cambodia is not new. There is a total of 817 km long border between the two countries, which continues to have a dispute over many parts. Especially the historic Prehir Temple of the 11th century, which UNESCO declared the World Heritage Site in 2008, remains the center of controversy. This temple is located in the hilly area and is also considered strategically important.
In 1962, the International Court of Court (ICJ) considered this temple as part of Cambodia. But Thailand did not accept this decision completely. Since then, this area has been a cause of tension between the two countries, which is still coming up in the form of violence and clashes.
