Voice of the People Party (VVP) Shillong MP Ricky AJ Singkon passed away after suddenly falling ill while playing football on Thursday (19 February 2026) evening, sending a wave of condolence across political circles in Meghalaya. According to sources, Singkon had gone to play football with friends at a playground in Mawlai Maviong on Thursday evening.

According to the IANS report, during the match, he collapsed on the field, due to which the people present there immediately took him to the nearby Maviong Community Health Center (CHC) for treatment in emergency condition. However, according to sources, due to non-availability of a doctor in the hospital at that time, he was referred to a higher centre. Later he was admitted to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jio for advanced treatment. Hospital sources said that despite the efforts of the medical team, Syangkon could not be saved.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma tweeted, ‘Hon’ble MP from Shillong, Dr. Ricky A. J. I am extremely shocked and saddened by the untimely demise of Singcon. Dr. Ricky was a dedicated and compassionate leader with a deep passion for public service and an unwavering commitment to his people. He was a man of faith and served with humility, foresight and a true desire for the upliftment of the society. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and countless well-wishers in this difficult time. May God rest his soul in peace.

When was Ricky AJ Singcon declared dead?

Ricky AJ Singcon was declared dead at around 8:42 pm, leaving his supporters, colleagues and residents of the state stunned by his sudden loss. As soon as the news of his demise was received, Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tinsong, VPP President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, along with several MLAs, senior political leaders and party workers rushed to the hospital and paid tribute and consoled the family. Singkon, a first-time MP, had made his mark as a prominent political figure after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with an overwhelming majority.

Fought the election on VVP ticket

Contesting the elections on a VVP ticket, he defeated three-time Congress MP Vincent H. Pala by a huge margin of over 37 lakh votes, bringing about a significant change in the political scenario of Meghalaya. Known for its grassroots engagement and advocacy for tribal rights, governance and transparency, the sudden demise of Singcon has left a void in state and national politics, especially within the VPP. Leaders of all parties expressed deep condolences on his demise and remembered him as a dedicated public representative.
