Shock to AAP before Chandigarh Mayor elections, two councilors join BJP, know what is the new numbers game

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered a major setback in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Two councilors of the party have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Aam Aadmi Party councilors Suman Devi and Poonam Devi have decided to leave the party and join BJP.

Let us tell you, mayor elections are going to be held in January 2026. Earlier this was considered a big loss for the Aam Aadmi Party. There are a total of 35 councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, while the local MP has one vote.

What is the number of councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation?

Till now BJP had 16 councilors in the corporation, whose number has increased to 18. At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party had 13 councilors whose number has reduced to 11. Congress has 6 councilors while one vote belongs to Congress MP Manish Tiwari.

How many votes are required for majority in Municipal Corporation?

It is known that BJP had won the mayor elections held in January 2025 this year despite having less councillors. BJP’s Harpreet Kaur Babla defeated Aam Aadmi Party and Congress’s joint candidate Prem Lata. Babla got 19 votes, while Prem Lata got 17 votes. The majority figure in the Municipal Corporation is 19.
