29 lakh notice to vegetable shopkeeper
Shankar Gowda, a person named near the municipal high school grounds here, has been running a small vegetable shop for the last four years. Most of their customers buy them vegetables by paying them money from UPI or other digital wallets. However, the great difficulties for Shankar Gowda stood in front when sending a notice of 1.63 crore transactions during the last four years, the GST officer has asked them to pay Rs 29 lakh.
Fresh vegetables do not seem GST
Vegetable shopkeeper Shankar Gowda says that they bring fresh vegetables directly from the farmers and then sell them from their small shop. He says that most of their customers pay through UPI, rarely any customer comes who give cash. Vegetable shopkeepers further say that they file income tax returns every year and keep their records correctly, but surprise happened when this impossible amount was asked to repay them as GST.
According to Cleartax, fresh vegetables do not come under the purview of GST. If the vegetable vendors buy directly from the farmers and sell it without any fresh processing, then they do not come under the purview of GST. According to the Economic Times, recently the GST department of Karnataka said that they are keeping a close watch on such businessmen who take payment from UPI. It was also said on his behalf that whose turnover crosses the limit and they will be sent a notice for GST registration.
