There are some films in the history of Bollywood, which not only entertain, but also remain forever in people’s memories with their stories, characters and dialogues. One such film is ‘Sholay’, and director Ramesh Sippy has an important contribution behind it. Ramesh Sippy made many superhit films in his career, but ‘Sholay’ added to his popularity.
Sholay’s dialogues became a hit
Some dialogues of the film like ‘Jo Dar Gaya, Samjho Mar Gaya’, ‘Ab Tera Kya Hoga Kalia’ and ‘Yeh Haath Mujhe De De Thakur’ are still on the lips of audiences of all ages. These dialogues are not just dialogues but have become a part of the memories of Hindi cinema.
Ramesh Sippy was born on 23 January 1947 in Karachi, Pakistan. His father, Gopaldas Parmanand Sippy, known as GP Sippy, was a famous Bollywood producer. After partition, the Sippy family came to Mumbai and settled. Ramesh, who grew up in a film environment since childhood, acted as a child artist in the film ‘Shahenshah’ at the age of just 6. However, he did not act when he grew up, but following his father’s footsteps, he entered the world of film direction.
Ramesh Sippy’s journey
Ramesh Sippy started his career with the 1971 film ‘Andaz’. This film had stars like Shammi Kapoor and Hema Malini and the audience liked the film very much. After this, he made ‘Sita Aur Geeta’ in 1972, in which Hema Malini played a double role. This film was also successful and Ramesh Sippy’s identity was established as a skilled director.
Sholay had created history
His biggest film ‘Sholay’ released in 1975 changed the direction of Bollywood. The film featured veteran actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bhaduri, Hema Malini and Sanjeev Kumar. Amjad Khan made the character of ‘Gabbar’ so alive that even today children and adults repeat his dialogues. Ramesh Sippy designed every dialogue and character of the film in such a way that it stood the test of time.

But, when the film was released, the audience immediately accepted its story and dialogues and the film ran in theaters for five consecutive years. The film held the record of the highest grossing Hindi film for 19 years.
