Should oil be put in the ears of small children or not?
According to experts, the process of putting oil in the ear is called Karna Purna. It may be beneficial in some situations, but it is not safe for children of every age. The oil softens earwax i.e. ear dirt. This makes cleaning easier. Dryness of ears can also be reduced. But, it is safe only if the doctor allows it, because the ears of small children are very sensitive.
Which children should not put oil in their ears?
1. Not at all in children younger than 6 months – Ears are very delicate at this age. Putting oil increases the risk of infection, the eardrum can also get affected and thick oil can get stuck inside.
2. If there is pain, water, pus or itching in the ear – In such a situation, adding oil can further increase the infection.
What precautions should be taken while adding oil?
1. Always use lukewarm oil only.
2. Keep in mind that the oil should not be too hot, otherwise the ears may burn.
3. After adding oil, clean very gently with a cotton ball stick.
4. Do not insert the stick deep inside. This can cause more dirt to enter the ear. If the child is very small, do not clean yourself.
