Indian ODI team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has become fit. Before making a comeback to international cricket from the ODI series against New Zealand, Iyer will play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain of the Mumbai team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Iyer has been given the captaincy in place of bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) “MCA is pleased to announce that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of the Mumbai Senior Men’s team for the remaining league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” MCA said in a statement on Monday.

Iyer’s continuation as captain after the league stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy is dependent on his fitness for international matches being cleared by the BCCI. Iyer has been included in the team for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which will start from January 11 in Baroda.

Shreyas Iyer has been given approval to play with certain conditions from BCCI’s Center of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. Iyer spent 10 days at the COE for his final phase of rehabilitation. Iyer also played a practice match on January 2 under the return-to-play protocol. Iyer did not feel any kind of problem during this practice match.

Let us tell you that Iyer’s record in Vijay Hazare Trophy has been excellent. He played an inning of 114 runs in 50 balls against Karnataka in the year 2024. Iyer has consistently performed brilliantly in this tournament. He was the highest run scorer for Mumbai last season by scoring 325 runs in 5 matches.

Iyer suffered a serious injury during India’s third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 25 October 2025. While trying to take a catch near the third-man boundary, Iyer lost his balance and fell on the ground on his ribs. This caused serious injury to his spleen and also caused internal bleeding. Since then Iyer has been away from the cricket field.
