Shreyas Iyer Rib Cage Injury: During the third ODI match against Australia, Indian team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious injury on the field. According to reports, he suffered an injury to his ribs during the match, due to which internal bleeding started in his body. Seeing the seriousness of the injury, he was immediately admitted to a hospital in Sydney, where doctors kept him in the ICU.

After this news came out, questions started rising in people’s minds that what is internal bleeding and how dangerous it can be. So let us tell you today why internal bleeding occurs in the ribs and when it becomes dangerous.

What is internal bleeding?

When the blood vessels of our body burst due to some injury, the blood starts accumulating inside the body instead of coming out, this is called internal bleeding. It is not visible from outside, so it is difficult to identify. Sometimes, even in minor injuries, a small amount of blood may accumulate inside, which heals on its own after some time. However, if the injury is near any major and vital part such as lungs, liver, spleen or kidney, then it can prove to be very dangerous.

Why does internal bleeding occur in ribs?

Ribs protect vital parts like our lungs and heart. When a rib breaks due to a sharp impact or injury, its sharp end can pierce the surrounding parts or blood vessels. Due to this, blood starts flowing inside and there is difficulty in breathing. Some common causes of rib injury are a sharp blow or fall during sports or an accident, direct hit on the chest by a strong object, aggravation of an old injury due to deep cough or pressure in breathing and fracture of ribs due to weakness of bones.

When does internal bleeding of ribs become dangerous?

An injury to the ribs can be fatal when the injury causes a hole in the lung, causing the lung to shrink, or when large blood vessels in the artery burst and bleed heavily inside. Parts near the ribs like liver, spleen or kidneys may get damaged. In such cases, it is necessary to immediately admit the patient in the ICU so that bleeding can be controlled and surgery can be performed if necessary.
