Shreyas Iyer Injury: Indian cricket team’s star batsman Shreyas Iyer has suffered a serious injury to his spleen. He was admitted to ICU. However, due to his condition improving, he is now out of ICU. He suffered this injury while taking a diving catch in the third ODI match against Australia played in Sydney. After his health deteriorated, he was immediately taken to the hospital, where his condition became very critical. Now he is under doctor’s supervision. Let us tell you what is the function of spleen in the body and how many problems arise after injury.
What is the function of spleen?
Generally, we all know more about only a few parts of our body, which include heart, lungs, kidney and liver. People have very little information about spleen. It is known as spleen in Hindi. It is a small but very important organ located below the ribs on the left side of our body. Its main function is related to our immune system and blood purification. To put it plainly, people do not know about it because it is not included in those essential parts of the body, about which it is important to have information. But its presence strengthens our immunity and helps in keeping the blood healthy.
How dangerous is it to get injured?
It is a very delicate and soft organ, whose main function is to manage red blood cells and white blood cells and protect them from infection. If it gets hurt, it may burst. If there is a serious injury to the spleen, internal bleeding can start inside the body, which can prove fatal. In this, some symptoms start appearing in the body after the injury, such as sudden severe stomach pain, pain in the ribs or shoulder on the left side, weakness and dizziness, rapid heartbeat and falling blood pressure. If treatment is not done in time, this condition can become serious and sometimes surgery becomes necessary.
How is the treatment done?
If we talk about its treatment, treatment is done based on the extent of injury and how much blood has been shed. If there is a minor injury in the spleen and there is not much bleeding, then the patient is kept only on bed rest and observation. If there is minor injury to the spleen, the patient is kept hospitalized for a few days. Apart from this, when the injury is very serious and internal bleeding from the spleen does not stop, then surgery has to be done.
