Shri Prakash Jaiswal, MP from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has passed away. He breathed his last at the age of 81. Shri Prakash Jaiswal was ill for a long time. On Friday (November 28, 2025), after his health worsened, he was taken to Cardiology Hospital in Kanpur, where doctors declared him dead. Shri Prakash Jaiswal had also been the Coal Minister and Home Minister in the central government of Dr. Manmohan Singh. The news of his demise has created a wave of mourning in political circles.

Jaiswal was elected MP from Kanpur four times

Shri Prakash Jaiswal has been a four-time MP from Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress and played important roles in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. He served as the Union Coal Minister between 2009 and 2014, while he was the Minister of State for Home from 2004 to 2009. He was always respected in the House for his efficient administration and parliamentary debates.

Started political journey from City Congress Committee

Shri Prakash Jaiswal was born on 25 September 1944 in Kanpur, Jaiswal started his political journey from the local level. He went from being the President of the City Congress Committee to the Joint Secretary of the State Congress Committee. In the 1990s, he reached the Lok Sabha for the first time from Kanpur and was subsequently elected consecutively in 1996, 2004 and 2009. While in the Coal Ministry, he laid special emphasis on regional development, while in the Home Ministry, his activism on the issues of internal security and law and order was commendable.

Shri Prakash Jaiswal was ill for a long time

Jaiswal, who was suffering from health related problems for a long time, had become more critical in the last few days. According to family members, his health had deteriorated significantly since this morning and he was taken to the Cardiology Hospital late in the evening. On reaching there, the doctors confirmed his death after examination. The main cause of death is said to be heart related complications.,

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi expressed grief

Many prominent leaders of the country including the Prime Minister, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi have expressed grief over his death. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid tribute by tweeting. Representatives of political parties in Kanpur have announced to organize a joint condolence meeting. The mortal remains of Shri Prakash Jaiswal will be given a final farewell in Kanpur tomorrow morning.
