Shubman Gill neck injury: On the second day of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, Indian captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck strain immediately after hitting a four with a sweep shot. After the dismissal of Washington Sundar, Gill came to bat in the 35th over and as soon as he came, he hit a four with a tremendous sweep. After that shot, he suddenly felt severe pain and retired hurt, holding his neck and walked out of the field. BCCI said that Gill is admitted in the hospital and he has been ruled out of the first Test match. Let us know why Gill felt severe pain in his shoulder after hitting a four and how dangerous is this condition?
What is Shubman’s problem?
According to media reports, Shubhman Gill has been shifted to ICU for treatment, where the medical team is continuously monitoring his condition. All scans and MRI tests have been completed. The Indian captain was complaining of severe pain near the neck, due to which he was admitted to the ICU for better care. The good thing is that initial reports are indicating improvement in his condition. According to the latest update, Shubhman Gill has spasm in his neck, due to which he is having difficulty in breathing and moving his body. He has been shifted to Woodlands Hospital for observation.
How dangerous is a neck strain?
According to the Mayo Clinic, sudden neck pain is often caused by muscle tension, improper movement, or pressure on a nerve. Same situation was seen in the case of Shubman Gill also. While attempting the sweep shot, his upper body rotated rapidly, due to which there was sudden stress on the neck muscles and a spasm was created. This was the reason that immediately after hitting a four, he felt severe pain and he retired hurt and went out of the field. Various medical reports suggest that sudden strain on the neck muscles is usually mild, but sometimes it can cause pressure on nerves, tissue injury or stress on the cervical spine. In such cases, the pain may become severe and it becomes difficult to turn the head. Therefore, such pain in players is not taken lightly and immediate scanning is advised.
When can it cause more trouble?
According to Mayo Clinic, it usually resolves within a few days after treatment. But if some symptoms are seen along with stretching and pain, then it may be worth being cautious. Such as
- Pain that persists or does not subside within days
- Pain accompanied by weakness, numbness, tingling sensation in the arm, arm or shoulder
- If any of these are found, you should immediately consult a doctor.
