Side Effects of Daily Medicines: Medicines are meant for treatment, but do you know that long-term use of some medicines gradually reduces the body’s essential nutrition? This deficiency keeps increasing internally and can later cause fatigue, weakness of immunity, weakening of bones and many such problems, which people often attribute to some other reason. Dr. Garima Goyal had posted a post on Instagram regarding this, in which she tells that dietician and nutritionist, medicines like aspirin, birth control pills, antacid, metformin and some antibiotics hinder the absorption of vitamins and minerals in the body. Let us tell you about them in detail and how they affect your body.

aspirin

Aspirin reduces the absorption of Vitamin C in the body, due to which its quantity gradually decreases. Taking aspirin for a long time can also reduce iron stores in the body. According to a large study, the ASPREE trial, the risk of anemia increases by about 20 percent in people above 65 years of age taking 100mg low-dose aspirin daily.

Tylenol, Acetaminophen

Glutathione is the main antioxidant of the body, which protects cells from damage. Medicines like Tylenol reduce its levels, which increases the risk of liver damage. Low glutathione levels affect aging, diabetes, infection and the immune system.

birth control pills

Continuous consumption of birth control pills depletes many vitamins and minerals in the body, such as folic acid, B2, B6, B12, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, selenium and zinc. According to the WHO report, this deficiency can be so severe that many women have to take supplements. The reason for this is not completely clear, but it is believed that the estrogen and progesterone present in these pills affect the process of nutrition in the body.

metformin

Metformin, which is given to diabetes patients, reduces the absorption of vitamin B12 in the intestine. Its use for a long time can cause B12 deficiency in the body, which increases the risk of nerve damage.

antacid

Antacids reduce the acid produced in the stomach, but eating this acid helps in releasing vitamin B12. Taking antacids for a long time can also cause deficiency of calcium, potassium and zinc in the body, due to which bones can become weak and muscles can become loose.

statins

Statin drugs reduce cholesterol and are beneficial for heart health, but they reduce Coenzyme Q10 in the body, which is necessary for muscle energy production. Its deficiency can cause problems like muscle pain, weakness and swelling.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics kill harmful bacteria, but they also harm the good gut bacteria. Due to this, the gut balance gets disturbed, which affects obesity, allergies, digestive problems and immunity.

steroids

Steroids disturb the mineral balance of the body in many ways. These reduce calcium absorption, due to which bones become weak and vitamin D activity also reduces. Due to this, magnesium and potassium levels decrease, which causes problems like weakness, fatigue and cramps in the body. Taking steroids for a long time also reduces the effect of B Vitamins, which affects energy and nerve function.

If you are taking any medications for a long time, ask your doctor or dietitian about which vitamin or mineral supplements you should take along with it. Small precautions can save you from many problems like fatigue, anemia, bone loss and hormonal imbalance.
