Early Warning Signs Of Weak Heart: Early signs of heart disease are often ignored because their symptoms resemble fatigue or normal changes of aging. But a new study suggests that just a simple neck scanning can detect men at early risk of heart failure. This test is called carotid ultrasound. This is the same technique as ultrasound done during pregnancy. The researcher says that doctors can advise men above 60 years of age to undergo this test.

What do experts say?

Dr. Atinuke Akinmolayan (UCL), who served as the study’s lead researcher, said: “Carotid ultrasound is a safe, inexpensive and painless test. Our results show that it can provide early signs of heart failure.” He said that if a patient’s ultrasound report shows a risk, then they can talk to the doctor in time about lifestyle changes, which can reduce the risk of heart failure in future. This test takes between 15 to 30 minutes. In this, the elasticity of the carotid arteries is seen by rotating a small handheld device on the neck. These arteries supply blood to the brain, face and neck.

Heart attack cases are increasing

According to the British Heart Foundation, about 9.2 lakh people in the UK are living with heart failure. The large arteries of the body are normally flexible, but due to age and some diseases, they start becoming stiff. Due to this, blood pressure increases, pressure on the heart increases and the heart starts becoming weak. This also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. This UCL-led study included 1,631 men (aged 71 to 92). The data was taken from the British Regional Heart Study, which began in the 1970s. The results found that men who had the least flexible carotid arteries had 2.5 times the risk of heart failure.

what was the conclusion

The conclusion of this entire study was that men whose carotid arteries were thicker had a higher risk of heart attack. For every 0.16 mm increase in thickness, the risk of heart attack increases by about 29 percent. Professor Brian Williams, Chief Medical Officer of the BHF, said: “This is a clear sign that when the carotid arteries harden, the heart has to work harder to pump blood. This increases the risk of heart failure. Any such change should be taken seriously.”

Another study from UCL shows that just one 10-minute scanning can identify the cause of difficult-to-control blood pressure in millions of patients. This scan is for those patients whose adrenal glands produce a hormone called aldosterone in excess. Due to this, the salt level in the body gets disturbed and the blood pressure increases drastically. This problem is seen in one out of every four people with high BP.
