US President Donald Trump had recently claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed him as ‘Sir’. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has rejected this claim of Trump. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Prime Minister Modi and US President Trump share friendly relations based on mutual respect.
Randhir Jaiswal said at the weekly media briefing, ‘Prime Minister Modi and President Trump have friendly relations and they have always addressed each other with mutual respect as per diplomatic norms.’
What did Trump claim?
Trump had claimed, ‘Prime Minister Modi came to meet me and said – Sir, can I meet you?’, claiming that PM Modi had expressed his desire to meet him to raise the issue of slow speed of delivering goods by helicopter.
The US President often claims that except Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, all foreign leaders address him as ‘Sir’.
What did Trump say about Apache helicopter?
Trump further said that India had ordered 68 Apache helicopters and has been waiting for delivery for years. However, according to official records, India had ordered only 28 AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters from the US, which were to be delivered by December 2025.
Let us tell you that the purchase of Chinook and Apache helicopters was done in two different phases. India has also purchased 15 CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters from Boeing, which were delivered between 2019 and 2020. Even if both the deals are combined, it would be only 43 and not 68. Trump is often known for his exaggerated statements. Like he had repeatedly claimed that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was achieved by threatening tariffs.
MEA rejected Lutnik’s claim
During this time, the Ministry of External Affairs also rejected the claim of America’s Commerce Minister Howard Lutnick that the India-America trade deal could not be done because PM Modi did not talk to Trump on phone. Randhir Jaiswal said that PM Modi and Trump have talked eight times in the year 2025.
