Many people think of sitting for a while and scrolling through social media or playing games, but experts warn that sitting in the toilet for too long can prove to be dangerous for health. According to CNN report, Dr. Lai Shue, a colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, USA, said that when patients come with complaints related to stomach or bowel movements, during the examination, the habit of spending more time in the toilet comes to the fore as a major reason. Dr. Farah Monjoor, gastroenterologist at Stony Brook Medicine, New York, says that generally the safe time to sit in the toilet should not be more than 5 to 10 minutes.
Doctors explain that due to the design of the toilet seat and the force of gravity, the lower part of the body remains under downward pressure when sitting for a long time. Due to this, blood starts filling in the veins around the anus and rectum, but is not able to return properly. The result is that the veins swell and the risk of hemorrhoids increases. Pelvic floor muscles also become weak due to continuous straining and sitting for a long time. These muscles control the process of bowel movement. Due to their weakness, problems like constipation, difficulty in controlling urine or stool and pain can arise.
Case has been found in China
There was a case regarding this in China. In which a person used to play video games on mobile while sitting in the toilet for about 30 minutes every day. One day, during bowel movement, his rectum came out of his body by about six inches. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed rectal prolapse. According to doctors, the habit of sitting in the toilet for a long time and pre-existing weakness gave rise to this serious condition.
Instead of exerting yourself, get up and take a walk for a while.
Doctors advise not to take mobile, book or magazine to the toilet. If bowel movement does not occur within 10 minutes, then instead of applying force, get up and walk for a while. It is also important to drink enough water and eat fiber-rich foods like pulses, oats and vegetables. If you are experiencing prolonged constipation, bleeding or taking unusually long time to go to the toilet, do not ignore it. Consulting a doctor in time can save you from serious problems.
