A recent episode of the TV show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC) has created a stir on social media. Actually, when Ishit Bhatt, a fifth class student in Gujarat, reached KBC, everyone’s eyes were fixed on him. Actually, he appeared ‘overconfident’ and ‘rude’ in the show. He even told host Amitabh Bachchan that sir, do not repeat the rules. I know everything. Ask direct questions! After this this child got trolled on social media.

Some people say that this is the result of six pocket syndrome. He is spoiled because he is a single child. In such a situation, the question arises whether your child also acts like Ishith Bhatt? If your answer is yes then know how you can improve it?

What is six pocket syndrome?

According to Richa Aggarwal, a counseling psychologist at Yatharth Hospital in New Delhi, the term Six Pocket Syndrome has come from China. There is a ‘One Child Policy’, due to which the child gets the love of two parents, two grandparents and two maternal grandparents (total six pockets). It is also called six pocket syndrome or little emperor syndrome. The same thing is happening now in India also. In small families, the child is everyone’s favorite, due to which he becomes arrogant.

What changes occur in children?

According to Richa, children become dependent due to overindulgence. They are unable to tolerate failure, but this does not happen with every single child. In such cases, the style of parenting matters. If we look at the case of the KBC child, he was showing confidence, but seemed more aggressive according to his age. This is a case of age-inappropriate assertiveness.

Do single children deteriorate quickly?

There is a lot of debate going on on social media regarding Ishit Bhatt. Most people believe that single children live alone, due to which they become spoiled. Richa says that if parents set boundaries then even single children are normal. Studies show that such children can be victims of anxiety and less perseverance, but if they teach responsibility with love, everything can be fine.

How to control such children?

Richa told 6 practical ways, which can make the child confident without being over-indulgent. These can be followed very easily.

  • Set boundaries: Be strict on screen time, pocket money or extra treats. Always follow the same rules. The child will learn that there is ‘no’ in the world.
  • Assigned Responsibilities: Assign small tasks to children according to their age, like washing utensils or making the bed. With this the child will learn to trust himself.
  • Organize group activities: Do not leave the child alone. Let them play with friends at the park or join them in group games. In the group the child will learn to understand the feelings of others.
  • Teach money management: Let them take small purchasing or saving decisions. With this the child will understand that things do not come free.
  • Show how to control emotions: Handle your own frustration calmly. The child will copy you. Actually, children consider their parents as models.
  • Praise hard work: Appreciate the effort, not the result. Focus on patience, hard work and learning. With this the child will not be afraid of failure.
