New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani strongly condemned the chants of “We support Hamas”. These slogans were raised during a protest in a majority Jewish area of Queens. Many videos of the protests are going viral on social media, in which protesters are seen waving Palestinian flags and raising slogans in support of Hamas.
The US government has declared Hamas a terrorist organization. Mamdani, while reacting to the slogans, stressed that support to terrorist organizations will not be tolerated. He also defended the constitutional right to protest.
What did Zohran Mamdani say?
Mamdani wrote on X, “As I have said before, slogans in support of any terrorist organization have no place in our city. We will continue to protect New Yorkers as they enter and exit places of worship, while also maintaining their constitutional right to protest.”

What did the Governor of New York say?
Responding to the slogans, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said, “Hamas is a terrorist organization that calls for the genocide of Jews. No matter your political views, this kind of rhetoric is abhorrent and dangerous and has no place in New York.” Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said in a post on Twitter, “Marching in a Jewish-dominated area and chanting slogans in support of Hamas is a disgusting and anti-Semitic act that cannot be tolerated.”
Let us tell you that during an interview with Fox News in October last year, Mamdani had refused to condemn Hamas and instead talked about discussing questions related to New Yorkers. This latest incident has happened at a time when there is tension due to protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict after the October 7, 2023 attacks.
