Meanwhile, a report has come out, which has revealed why Pakistan is a dumper full of gravel?
There are only 23 thousand factories in Pakistan, while 6.04 lakh mosques and more than 36 thousand madrasas are present here. The first economic census report has revealed this interesting aspect of Pakistan’s social and economic picture. Pakistan Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal released the report on Thursday (August 21, 2025).
This report comes at a time when Pakistan is facing a deep financial crisis and is interacting with the International Monetary Fund for the second installment of the seven billion dollar relief package. According to the report published in the ‘Express Tribune’, the figures related to the economic sector were collected under ‘Population and Housing Census, 2023’, but the details were released on Thursday.
So many factories, schools and madrasas in Pakistan
According to the report, there are 23,000 factories in Pakistan, while the number of small production units has been found to be 6.43 lakhs. The report says that there are only 7,086 units where more than 250 people work. This shows that Pakistan’s economy rests on small businesses.
2.42 lakh schools, 11,568 colleges and 214 universities were registered in the education sector. Along with this, 6.04 lakh mosques and 36,331 madrasas are also running. While releasing the report, Iqbal said, ‘Reliable figures are the backbone of sustainable growth. Based on these, accurate schemes and policies can be made.
Out of 4 crore, only 72 lakh establishments provide employment
According to the data, there are about four crore permanent establishments in Pakistan, out of which only 72 lakh establishments provide employment. A total of 2.54 crore people are working in them. Maximum 1.13 crore i.e. 45 percent people are connected to the service sector, while 30 percent in the social sector and 22 percent in the production sector.
A government official said on these data, ‘The number of employment in the service sector is doubled compared to the production sector. The assumption is wrong that the industry is the biggest employer. Economic census revealed that Pakistan has 27 lakh retail shops, 1.88 lakh wholesale shops, 2.56 lakh hotels and about 1.2 lakh hospitals. According to state -wise data, Punjab province has the highest 58 percent establishments, while Sindh has 20 percent and Balochistan has only six percent establishments.
