A tragic train accident occurred in southern Spain on Sunday (18 January 2026). At least 21 people have died and several other passengers have been seriously injured in a head-on collision between two high-speed trains in Cordoba province. According to the Associated Press, it is considered one of Spain’s worst train accidents in recent years.
According to Spain’s railway organization ADIF, the accident occurred near Adamuz station in Cordoba at around 5:40 pm GMT. According to initial information, the Iryo 6189 high-speed train going from Malaga to Madrid suddenly derailed and went onto the nearby track. During this time, there was a strong collision with the train coming from the front going from Madrid to Huelva.

After the collision, both the trains derailed badly. Many coaches went down from the tracks and some coaches climbed over each other. The seriousness of the accident can be gauged from the fact that the help of heavy rescue machines had to be taken to rescue the passengers.
Ban on high-speed rail services
After this accident, high-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been stopped with immediate effect. However, commercial train services between Madrid, Toledo, Ciudad Real and Puertollano have continued as normal. Iryo Train Service is a private high-speed rail operator, operated by an Italian company. Andalusia’s emergency services said all rail traffic was stopped immediately after the accident and relief and rescue operations began. Several ambulances, fire brigade and medical teams were sent to the spot. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, although official information regarding the exact number of injured has not been released yet.
