The controversy over a minor seat in Mumbai’s local train has now become a big linguistic issue. On Friday (July 18), in a female compartment of the Central Line on the evening, a woman told another woman – “If you want to live in Mumbai, speak Marathi, otherwise get out”.
The incident happened when the train was packed with the crowd. During this time there was an argument among women. This incident video is now becoming increasingly viral on social media.
What is in viral video?
It was seen in the video that 6 to 7 women were arguing for one seat. In the midst of the debate, a woman commented on not speaking Marathi on another woman, which caught the matter.
Shortly, other women also started participating in the debate. After this incident, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have started investigating the case. Officials said that this matter has now become a matter of social and linguistic harmony.
Language dispute depth once again
This incident has again given air to the language politics going on in Maharashtra. Recently, there have been many cases of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists attacking non-Marathi speakers. This week, a shopkeeper was beaten up with WhatsApp status in Vikhroli, Mumbai. The shopkeeper was forced to publicly apologize.
Apart from this, on 1 July, a street food vendor was slapped in Marathi in Thane for not talking in Marathi. The migrant auto driver was publicly beaten in Palghar, including the Shiv Sena workers of the MNS and Uddhav Thackeray faction.
Mumbai businessman Sushil Kedia’s office was also vandalized because he had talked about not learning Marathi. The video of this incident has also gone viral, in which 5 to 6 people were seen throwing bricks in their office.
A security personnel tried to stop them, but the attackers did not stop even to vacate the bag. The businessman later released apologies. Such cases have once again raised the ongoing tension regarding the language and identity of Maharashtra.
