The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will also be part of the National Sports Administration Bill. The BCCI does not depend on financial assistance from the government, but it will have to get recognition from the proposed National Sports Board. The source of the Sports Ministry has confirmed India Today that the BCCI will also come under the purview of the National Sports Bill. This was expected after Team India attended the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports introduced the sports bill to improve sports ecosystem in India. With its implementation, BCCI is expected to come under its purview as the National Sports Federation.
A source told PTI, “BCCI will be an autonomous body like all other NSF, but the resolution of the disputes related to them will arrest the National Games. This bill does not mean any NSF control. Rather the government will play an important role in ensuring good governance.”
Till 2019, BCCI was not recognized as the National Sports Federation. It came under the purview of the Officer of Information in 2020. After including BCCI in the new sports bill, the Cricket Board will come under the purview of all the rules and instructions of the Ministry of Sports. It will have to be seen whether the recommendations of the Lodha Committee, including the age limit, the sections related to the conflict of interest, will remain applicable even further.
This draft has been prepared after many unsuccessful efforts. Its purpose is to protect the officers of the players and create a dispute-free environment in the sports world. This will strengthen the credibility of the country for the claim of the 2036 Olympic Games.
The report of India Today stated that this bill makes it mandatory to include at least four women in each executive committee to improve gender representation. This body will serve as a dedicated mechanism to resolve sports-related disputes. Its decision will only be challenged in the Supreme Court.
How will the Sports Governance Bill affect the Sports Federation?
The Sports Governance Bill has been designed to bring about the changes in Indian Games. Under this, the National Sports Board will be established. It will have the right to suspend the Sports Federations on the basis of complaints or its initiative. The proposed body appointed by the Central Government will have the right to take action on many issues.
India Today quoted the report of this draft as saying that the National Sports Board will lead a president. Some members will be included through the selection process under the supervision of the government. Sports Secretary or Cabinet Secretary will preside over the selection panel. It will include Arjun, Khel Ratna or Dronacharya Award, a respected player, 2 former top officials of National Federations and Director General of Authority.
