Long dispute between India and Sri Lanka
There has been a long dispute between India and Sri Lanka over the island of Kachthithivu. It has the biggest impact on Indian fishermen, who have arrested the Sri Lankan Navy many times while fishing. Indian fishermen are also tortured after arrest. Now the Sri Lankan President has intensified the political stir in the south by visiting the island.
What was a compromise regarding the island of Kachthithivu in 1974 and 1976
- 1974 agreement: India accepted Kachtivu as part of Sri Lanka under the leadership of Indira Gandhi. Indian fishermen were allowed to attend fishing, net drying and attending the celebration of St. Anthony Church.
- 1976 Agreement: Fishermen from both countries were banned from fishing in each other’s maritime area, which increased the problem of Indian fishermen.
- Time present: If Indian fishermen cross the border, the Sri Lankan Navy arrests them. Along with this, the boat also seizes. According to Alajjira’s report, a total of 535 Indian fishermen were arrested in 2024.
