On 13 July 1931, 22 people were killed in a firing of an army outside Srinagar jail during a protest against Dogra ruler Hari Singh in Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference (NC) wants to celebrate this day as ‘Martyrdom Day’ but the district administration did not allow the program.

The NC had applied to pay tribute to its chairman Farooq Abdullah and other senior leaders at the Napband Sahib cemetery at Navhatta. But on Saturday (July 12), the District Magistrate of Srinagar rejected it.

Srinagar police issued a message

Srinagar Police issued public consultation on the social media platform X and said that on July 13, all the people going to Khwaja Bazar, Navhatta have not been allowed. At the same time, an appeal was made to follow the instructions of the administration and to avoid any type of violation. According to PTI, the police warned that strict action will be taken as per law on violation of orders. NC has termed this move of administration as ‘very unfortunate’.

13 July is not a simple date- NC

The party’s chief spokesperson Tanveer Sadiq wrote on the X, “13 July is not a simple date, it reminds me of the sacrifices made in the demand for dignity, justice and rights.” He further said that the people of Kashmir will continue to remember their martyrs peacefully, respectfully and with a sense of spirit. It is noteworthy that this day used to be a public holiday before the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir, but in 2020 it was removed from the list of gazetted holidays.

Mehbooba Mufti targeted the speaker

At the same time, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has also launched a scathing attack on this issue. He said that the Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected the proposal for the PDP to declare a holiday on July 13 and then denied this, while the same Speaker has approved the first two government proposals. Mehbooba wrote on X, “When the Speaker approved two proposals before his discretion, then why was the resolution respected to the martyrs? People should decide themselves.”

Last year, several leaders were placed under house arrest to prevent the cemetery. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said that the party’s proposal to declare the holiday on July 13 was not allowed to appear in the House.
