Srinagar rape and murder: The dreaded incident of alleged rape and murder of a nomadic woman in Nishat area of Srinagar has shook the entire Kashmir Valley. The police have arrested four alcoholics involved in the alleged crime in quick action, while the local people and community leaders have demanded strict action against the accused.
According to Srinagar police, at around 5 pm, information was received at Nishat police station that some drunken people in the Waterworks Road area of Upper Nishat attacked a nomadic tribal woman and seriously injured her.
The woman (name Gupta), originally from Reasi and currently living in Nishat area, was attacked by some drunk people near Waterworks Road on Sunday. Police reached the spot and recovered the woman in a seriously injured condition, she was immediately taken to the nearby hospital, but on reaching there, she was declared dead. Taking quick action on the information, the police have started investigating the case by registering FIR No. 35/2025 under the relevant sections of the law.
As part of the investigation, four suspects have been detained for questioning. He has been identified as residents of different areas around Nishat and Sumbal. The accused have been identified by Suhail Bashir Bhat (23) son Bashir Ahmed resident Ashram Sumbal, Adil Ali Bhat (27) son Ali Mohammad Bhat resident Jethyar Nishat, Firdaus Ahmed Rathar (46) son Ghulam Ahmed resident Jethyar Nishat and Suhail Afzal Bhat (28) son Mohammad Afzal Bhat resident Spore Brain Nishat.
Police sources say that at present, all the people are being questioned and further action will be taken on the basis of the result of the investigation.
The cruel nature of crime has created heavy resentment among the residents, especially in the Guptakar Mohalla, where the local Intizamia Committee has strongly condemned the incident. In a statement, the committee demanded that the police take action decisively and ensure that the culprits get the most rigorous punishment under the law.
The committee said, “This heinous act has not only violated the dignity of a woman, but has also hurt the community’s conscience deeply. We demand immediate and exemplary justice.”
Local people of the region have expressed fear and anger over the lack of regulation and security, especially for weak nomadic groups that often live in temporary shelters.
Many politicians have also condemned and demanded quick action against the accused. Tribal leader and National Conference MP Mian Altaf Ahmed expressed pain and surprise over a terrible attack on a nomadic woman in Srinagar, seeking a fast-track investigation into the incident and an exemplary punishment for the culprits involved in this heinous crime.
Mian Altaf urged, “Civil and police administration should provide all possible help to the victim’s family and ensure that justice is received.”
Sajjad Lone, president of the People’s Conference, wrote on the social media platform X, “Brmble crime against a tribal woman. A tribal woman was sexually assaulted and murdered in Nishat area. The culprits should get severe punishment and fast-track trials.”
Mian Meher Ali, a member of the Kangan Assembly, also demanded a fast-track inquiry into the incident and demanded strict punishment to the culprits involved. Meanwhile, the police have assured that the case is being taken seriously and justice will be given in a professional manner.
