Journey started from boutique
Manish, born on 5 December 1966, once earned only Rs 500 a month in a small boutique in Bandra. The journey that started from there has today reached Dubai, London and Delhi after Mumbai. In an interview, he had told that he was passionate about films since childhood. Every Friday in 10th class there was a wait for a new movie. I didn’t have much interest in studies, but I had a lot of love for colors, paper and pencils. He also used to go to the market with his mother to see or buy sarees for her. Mother liked his choice. From here he started liking fashion.
Started working in boutique
Manish says that his mother was his first inspiration, who never stopped and always encouraged him. After completing his schooling, Manish started working in a boutique with this inspiration. For him, folding clothes all day long, showing them to customers and understanding designs was like finding the way to the future. He used to sit for hours in the boutique, sketching and understanding the designs. He also used to put new ideas on the page.
Got my first break from ‘Swarga’
Meanwhile, the 1990 Govinda-Juhi Chawla and Rajesh Khanna starrer film ‘Swarg’ proved to be a turning point in his career. He got his first break at the age of 25. His work in the film was well liked. After this he never looked back and continued climbing the ladder of success. After this he designed costumes for films like ‘Gumrah’ and ‘Rangeela’.
After this, Manish became a part of many successful films including ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, ‘Student of the Year’. Not only this, be it Kareena Kapoor’s wedding lehenga or Alia’s bridal look or his journey of designing Kiara Advani’s dress, he has become a fashion icon not only in Bollywood but also in the world.
