Ashes Test: In the fifth and last Ashes Test being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith performed a feat which further elevated his name in cricket history. On the third day against England, Smith scored his 37th Test century and with this he broke the 96-year-old Ashes record.
Second most successful batsman in Ashes
Steve Smith overtook England’s legendary batsman Jack Hobbs by scoring his 13th century in the Ashes series. Hobbs had scored 12 centuries in the Ashes, while Smith has now reached second place with 13 centuries. In this list, only the great Don Bradman is ahead of him, who scored 19 centuries in the Ashes. It is a big achievement in itself for a batsman to leave Hobbs behind after 96 years.
Most runs in Ashes history
Don Bradman – 5028 runs
Steve Smith – 3682 runs
Jack Hobbs – 3636 runs
Sachin Tendulkar was also left behind
With this century, Smith left behind Sachin Tendulkar, who is called the God of Indian cricket, in a special matter. Smith completed 37 Test centuries in just 219 innings, whereas Sachin Tendulkar achieved this milestone in 220 innings. However, the record of scoring the fastest 37 centuries in this list is still in the name of Ricky Ponting, who achieved this feat in 212 innings.
Amazing as a captain too
Steve Smith, who became the acting captain in the absence of Pat Cummins, scored his 18th Test century as captain. Only Graeme Smith, Virat Kohli and Ricky Ponting have scored more centuries as captain in Test cricket. The special thing is that Smith’s average as captain is more than 68, which makes him one of the most successful captains in this format.
Overall, this innings of Steve Smith will be counted among the most memorable innings in Ashes history, in which experience, patience and class were clearly visible.
