Unusual movement is being seen for the last few days near Hakimpur Border Outpost (North 24 Parganas) on the border of West Bengal and Bangladesh. People sitting on the roadside, women, men and children are seen with fear on their faces. They have bags, blankets and boxes lying around, which shows that they want to leave their homes and return to Bangladesh as soon as possible. According to officials, this reverse migration has been increasing rapidly in recent times. That means, earlier these people had come to India illegally and now they are trying to return back to their country.
Talking to Indian Express, Abdul Momin told that he came to India from Satkhira district five years ago. He told that he had come to Domjud in Howrah through a broker. Fearing the SIR (Special Intensive Care Unit) operation, he reached Hakimpur early in the morning with his wife and two children.
500 illegal citizens are trying to return to Bangladesh
This incident has become a cause of political controversy in North 24 Parganas district. About 500 illegal Bangladeshi citizens, who had to live in hiding in the suburbs of Kolkata for years, are trying to return to Bangladesh fearing the SIR operation. However, BSF stopped him from entering India and BGB on the Bangladesh border did not allow him to enter the country. BJP is calling it a step against illegal infiltration, while TMC is considering it a political conspiracy.
‘I am scared after hearing about NRC’, said the woman
A woman told that she had come to New Town ten years ago. Feeling scared after hearing about NRC. He does not have Indian documents. She said she worked as a domestic help and her husband did manual scavenging. According to BSF, more than 400 people have reached Hakimpur in the last one week.
By Tuesday afternoon, the number of people stranded at the border exceeded 500. These people are mainly natives of Satkhira and Jashore districts, who used to do domestic work or small businesses in Kolkata. People are scared of door-to-door document checking under SIR. According to BSF, this is the biggest reverse migration of this year.
Most people do not have legal documents
Some families have Indian documents, but they are still forced to return. BSF is doing strict checking of vehicles and motorcycles. Local people are making arrangements for food and accommodation. According to BSF, earlier 10-20 people used to return every day, now 150-200 people are trying every day. Most do not have legal documents. Apprehensions related to SIR have increased fear and uncertainty among illegal immigrants, leading to this reverse migration.
