The School Education Department in Maharashtra has taken an important and strict decision. Now any school in the state will be able to use words like ‘International’ or ‘Global’ in its name only if it fulfills the conditions set for it. If the school does not meet these standards, it will not be allowed to keep such a name. The purpose of this step is to protect parents and common people from getting misled.

The Education Department observed that many schools are adding words like ‘International’ or ‘Global’ in their names, even though they neither have any branch abroad nor are they associated with any international board. Such names make parents think that the standard of education in the school is very high or that international curriculum is taught there, whereas the reality is something else.

In the letter sent by the Joint Director of Secondary Education to the local education authorities, it is clearly stated that the words ‘International’ or ‘Global’ can be used only by those schools which have branches abroad or which are affiliated to any international board or curriculum. Schools affiliated with the state board will not be allowed to use these words unless they fulfill the necessary conditions.

Instructions for checking names

The Education Department has instructed local education officers to thoroughly scrutinize the names while proposing new schools or renovating old schools. In this, it will be seen which board the school is affiliated to, what is the medium of instruction and whether that institution also runs other schools in the country or abroad. If the name is found confusing, the school will first be asked to change the name, only then approval will be given.

Question on medium of study also

It has also been told in the letter that some schools write ‘English Medium’ in their name, but the government approval they have is for Marathi medium. With time, such schools started English medium without taking new permission. According to an official of the department, it is necessary to take separate approval to run English medium, but many schools are not following this rule.

Objection to the use of the word CBSE

The Education Department has also made it clear that using the word ‘CBSE’ in the name of the school is not legally correct. CBSE i.e. Central Board of Secondary Education is the name of an examination board, which has been created by the Central Government. No private school can directly use this word in its name, because this also creates confusion among the people.

Issue raised in state level meeting

This entire matter came to light in the state level meeting held on 10 December. In the meeting, officials acknowledged that such misleading names have a negative impact on students and parents. After this, it was decided that instructions would be given to change the names of schools whose names are against the rules.

Special instructions to 11 schools

The letter from the Education Department also gives a list of 11 schools which have applied for new or renewal approval in December 2025. Three of these schools are from Thane district, which is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. All these schools have been asked to apply again after making corrections in their names.
